World famous guitarist is playing in Jönköping tonight.

Tonight the former Scorpions guitatist Michael Schenker is playing in Zaragon Rock Club on Offside Sport & Rock Bar. On tour "Temple of Rock & Lovedrive reunion Tour 2013" are also former Scorpions members Francis Buchholz and Herman Rarebell. Jnytt got the opportunity to interview the world famous artist who also has been ranked the best guitar player in the world.

Michael Schenker can write many fine lines in his CV. He started already as early as 16 year old playing guitar in the world famous band Scorpions. In 1973 he left for the British heavy metal band UFO. Since then he has been an appreciated guitarist both as solo artist and in bands. This friday night he is visiting Jönköping.

Have you visited Jönköping before?

- I have definitely visited Sweden before. I even had a Swedish girlfriend before. If she is famous now I don't know but she should be i suppose (lol). However I cannot remember playing in Jönköping but I know that other great artists has been here. It seems you have an intense music scene here.

That is correct. Both Cream and the Who has been here playing.

- Is it true? That's incredible.

During May you are visiting several Swedish towns including Jönköping. What else on your agenda?

- We have just finalized a new album called "Bridge the gap". The Swedish stops are part of our tour all over Europe that started i Russia in april. Right now I am doing a lot of press and studio work for the tour.

You did win the "Lifetime achievement in Rock and Roll award" last year, are there anything in the rock world topping that?

- I dont know but I could never have dreamed about getting that price. It came as a flash from a clear sky. It was an honor for me.

You have been ranked as the best guitar player in the world, who do you find as the best player yourself?

- It is hard to say who I think is the best but I was quite inspired by the guitar kings from the 60-ies, most of all Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin). Eddie Van Halen was also incredible early on when starting his career.

Except for playing here, what else are you going to do in Jönköping during your visit?

- Just look around and find out whats going on in the town.

Are you going to party?

- I have grown out of that nowadays. I am focusing on the music when I am out touring.

Last, what can the audience expect of the show?

- It is simply going to be a fun show. The band has grown tight into a very strong unit. We love playing live and the show will be a salute to "handmade" rock and roll. We will play the most famous songs from my career and from scorpions up to today.

The guitar hero still burning!

It is all sold out when Michael Schenker is visiting Jönköping and odd would be otherwise when one of the best guitar players in the world is in town. But is should be. The reason Michael is playing in small clubs nowadays has more to do with the personal choices he has made in life more than his ability on the guitar. An ability nobody doubts this night. His string bending is still magnificent and he is combining feeling and technique in an unique way. This type of guy should sell out arenas with the right surrounding because Michael is much larger than the band itself.

The venue tonight, Zaragon Rock Club is an upslope soundvise. The low roof makes me wonder if I am in a shoe box listening but after a few songs it gets better but still far from great.

A lot of old material

But this is a night where we hear mostly old material from UFO, Scorpions and MSG. Lights Out, Rock you like a hurricane and Armed and ready to mention a few. The singer Doggie White is standing in the shadow this night and have to struggle in the higher pitches in the old Scorpion classics. The concert ends with encores where the band goes on and off the stage and closes with the UFO-classic. Doctor doctor to the thrill of the audience. I ask myself the question. Shouldnt encores only be used when the audience has been great or when the band is feeling for playing longer. Now it feels like most bands just includes encores in the original set list.=
