Michael Schenker fait partie de ces artistes qui ont beaucoup compte dans ma longue vie musicale. Je l'ai decouvert en 1976 lors d'un sejour linguistique en Grande-Bretagne. Mon hote m'avait alors fait ecouter l'excellent « No Heavy Petting »
de U.F.O. qu'il venait d'acquerir et sur lequel officiait le jeune guitariste blond venu d'outre-Rhin qui m'avait fort impressionne. En 1980 alors que j'habitais a Oxford en pleine N.W.O.B.H.M., j'etais tombe sur un article dans Sounds, que je devorais chaque semaine a l'epoque, relatant qu'un roadie avait ete vu jouant les parties de guitare de Michael derriere la scene, celui-ci etant dans l'incapacite d'assurer le job du fait de ses addictions... Le frere de Rudolph venait de lancer sa propre carriere et cette nouvelle m'avait foutu un coup au moral d'autant que je n'ai jamais su le fin mot de l'histoire. Mais comme dirait l'autre il n'y a jamais de fumee sans feu ! Cela ne m'a neanmoins pas empeche de tomber raide dingue de son second album solo « MSG »
que j'ecoutais en boucle en 1982 dans le radio-cassette de ma Simca 1100. Etonnamment je ne l'ai decouvert sur scene qu'en 1988 et un peu par hasard. C'etait a l'occasion de la tournee « Hysteria »
de Def Leppard. Poison devait en assurer la 1ere partie a Bercy et c'est finalement Michael qui a du les remplacer au pied leve avec son McAuley Schenker Group. Certains ont ete decus par sa prestation, pas moi assurement ! Meme si le groupe de Joe Elliott fut tres bon, je garde une preference pour M.S.G.. J'ai ensuite attendu pres d'une decennie pour le revoir mais quelle chance d'avoir enfin pu decouvrir U.F.O. live a l'occasion du « Walk On Water »
Tour a l'Elysee Montmartre en 1997. Avec Mr Schenker donc mais aussi Phil Mogg, Pete Way et Paul Raymond... Seul manquait a l'appel Andy Parker mais il fut remplace par Simon Wright (AIIZ, AC/DC, Dio...), excusez du peu... Je n'oublierai jamais ce moment meme si le guitariste blond claquera de nouveau la porte d'U.F.O. peu de temps apres ce concert ! Je le reverrai l'annee suivante au Zenith pour le G3 en la tres bonne compagnie de Joe Satriani et d'Uli Jon Roth avec Patrick Rondat en 1ere partie. Puis ce sera en 2006 de nouveau a l'Elysee Montmartre pour les 25 ans de mon album fetiche « MSG »
et a cette occasion j'acquerrai mon tout premier hoodie de Michael que je garde tres precieusement dans ma collection et porte a chacun de ses concerts, celui de ce soir ne faisant pas exception... A partir de 2012 ce sera avec son Temple Of Rock, Doogie White et la section rythmique originale de Scorpions (Francis et Herman) a l'ancien Forum Vaureal ou il reviendra l'annee suivante pour mon plus grand plaisir. Je ne le manquerai pas non plus a l'Empreinte de Savigny en 2014 pour 2 concerts successifs d'anthologie. En 2015 il passera au Bataclan et j'etais loin d'imaginer alors les terribles horreurs qui se produiraient 10 jours plus tard dans cette meme salle ! J'attendrai ensuite 7 longues annees avant de le retrouver au Hellfest avec un excellent Ronnie Romero au chant mais pour un set un peu court a mon gout. J'avais donc hate de rejoindre le Forum Vaureal en ce vendredi printanier pour mon 10eme rendez-vous avec mon guitariste allemand prefere lors d'une soiree integralement consacree a ses annees U.F.O. en compagnie du talentueux Erik Gronwall dont j'avais pu apprecier les performances vocales avec H.E.A.T. puis Skid Row.
A 19h30 petantes ce sont d'abord les Suisses de Gut's qui vont chauffer la salle du Forum avec leur repertoire tres inspire par AC/DC. On pourrait meme dire qu'ils sont des clones du groupe australien en particulier en ce qui concerne le jeu de scene des 2 guitaristes, tres proche d'Angus et de Malcolm. Musicalement ca tient bien la route et les compos comme « Nuts On The Road »
, « Dirty Squeeze »
ou « Drink To Drink »
demeurent originales meme si tres proches de celles de leurs celebres aines. Les riffs sont accrocheurs et les soli tres efficaces. La voix du chanteur s'adapte bien a ce registre, a mi-chemin entre Bon et Brian. Le public ne s'y trompe pas et reserve un accueil chaleureux a ces Helvetes fort sympathiques au demeurant !
Puis c'est au tour des Allemands de Human Zoo de s'emparer de la scene. Je ne les connaissais pas mais j'avoue avoir pris un reel plaisir a les decouvrir. Il faut dire que leurs influences ont tout pour me plaire, de Pink Cream 69 a Gotthard (dont ils ont repris le nom d'un album pour celui de leur combo) en passant par Bonfire ou Krokus. Leur originalite reside dans la presence d'un saxophoniste en leur sein et celui-ci apporte une touche pop plutot bienvenue a leur hard-rock traditionnel. A l'occasion de leur vingtieme anniversaire, ils viennent nous presenter leur cinquieme album sorti en 2024 « Echoes Beyond »
dont l'artwork decore toute la scene, marketing oblige ! On va ainsi faire connaissance avec ces nouveaux brulots que sont « Hello! Hello! »
, « Gun 4 A While »
, les tres FM « Echo »
et « To The Ground »
ou encore l'accrocheur « Ghost In Me »
. Human Zoo revisitera egalement des titres plus anciens comme « The Answer »
, « Like A Bitch »
ou le percutant « Love Train »
. En 40 minutes qui sont passees tres vite les Allemands ont conquis de nouveaux fans qui comme moi ne manqueront pas leurs prochains passages dans l'hexagone...
Mais c'est maintenant au tour du grand Michael de venir nous combler avec un Best Of d'U.F.O. d'autant plus apprecie que Phil Mogg a mis fin au groupe original il y a maintenant quelques annees. Coiffe de sa traditionnelle chapka, il est entoure d'Erik au chant donc, de Barend Courbois a la basse et des fideles Bodo Schopf a la batterie et Steve Mann aux claviers/guitares additionnelles. On attaque avec le heavy « Natural Thing »
bien connu des fans du groupe londonien tout comme le « Only You Can Rock Me »
qui lui succede. Pour etre honnete, la voix d'Erik ne me semble pas forcement la plus adaptee a ce repertoire car tres eloignee de celle de Mogg et surtout beaucoup moins « chaude »
et bluesy. J'aurai toute la soiree un peu de mal a m'y habituer mais c'est a peu pres le seul reproche qu'on peut faire selon moi a cette prestation... En tout cas il est certain que l'ex-chanteur de H.E.A.T. et de Skid Row est reellement un survivant car il a traverse il y a peu une leucemie qui aurait pu lui etre fatale. Il est toujours assez maigre mais fait preuve d'une belle energie tout au long du concert. Bodo est partiellement dissimule par un rideau de plexiglass mais son jeu de batterie est toujours aussi redoutable. Barend a maintenant gagne ses galons en tant que « nouvel »
arrivant chez M.S.G. et Steve reste toujours concentre sur ses 2 instruments de predilection en passant de l'un a l'autre de facon quasi constante. On reste en terrain connu avec « Hot 'n' Ready »
et surtout « Doctor Doctor »
un classique parmi les classiques d'U.F.O. qu'on aurait pu envisager plus vers la fin du set. Autre pepite, « Mother Mary »
deboule maintenant avec son ambiance bien 70's. La tension retombe un peu avec « I'm A Loser »
qui voit Erik empoigner une guitare acoustique avant un bien heavy « This Kid's »
qui met tout le monde d'accord. Grosse ambiance dans la salle pour l'excellent « Lights Out »
reprien cœur par l'assistance. On connait l'interet de Mr Schenker pour les instrumentaux puisqu'il en a sorti des albums entiers a l'epoque des « Thank You »
. Il nous ressort donc le « Lipstick Traces »
de « Phenomenon »
enchaine au « Between The Walls »
de « Force It »
avant un superbe et langoureux « Belladonna »
de « No Heavy Petting »
. Quelle joie d'entendre ensuite l'intro aux claviers du memorable « Love To Love »
qui fait partie de mon propre Top 5 d'U.F.O. depuis fort longtemps. On ne s'arrete pas en si bon chemin avec un dynamique « Let It Roll »
qui voit Barend et Bodo donner le meilleur d'eux-memes. Le rythme ne faiblit pas avec le trepidant « Can You Roll Her »
repris la encore en choeur par les fans de la premiere heure. On reste d'ailleurs sur mon album fetiche de 1976 « No Heavy Petting »
pour un bien hard « Reasons Love »
. On aura ainsi eu droit a toute la face A du vinyle de cet opus legendaire... Et ce n'est pas fini puisque le non moins culte « Rock Bottom »
vient nous percuter de plein fouet avec des soli du blondinet a tire-larigot... Et puis comment finir un hommage a U.F.O. sans les incontournables « Shoot Shoot »
et « Too Hot To Handle »
qui declenchent l'hysterie dans les premiers rangs ! Finalement on aura eu l'integrale du legendaire vinyle live des Anglais « Strangers In The Night »
a l'exception de « Out In The Street »
etonnament absent de la setlist de ce soir tout comme de l'album « My Years With U.F.O. »
de Michael sorti il y a peu avec toute une pleiade de chanteurs tous plus connus les uns que les autres...
Mr Schenker est revenu en force au « nouveau »
Forum Vaureal en 2025 devant une salle comble et comblee. Esperons qu'il revienne tres bientot avec son propre repertoire de sa carriere solo...

Michael Schenker is one of those artists who have played a big part in my long musical life. I discovered him in 1976 during a language trip to the UK. My host had me listen to the excellent "No Heavy Petting" by U.F.O., which he had just bought, featuring a young blond guitarist from across the Rhine who made a big impression on me.
In 1980, while I was living in Oxford at the height of the N.W.O.B.H.M., I came across an article in Sounds - which I devoured every week - reporting that a roadie had been seen playing Schenker's guitar parts backstage because Michael was unable to perform due to his addictions. Rudolph's brother had just launched his solo career, and this news hit me hard, all the more so because I never learned the full story. But as the saying goes, there's no smoke without fire!
Still, that didn't stop me from falling head over heels for his second solo album, MSG, which I played on repeat in 1982 on the tape deck of my Simca 1100.
Surprisingly, I didn't see him live until 1988 - and that, quite by chance. It was during Def Leppard's "Hysteria" tour. Poison was originally slated to open at Bercy, but it ended up being Michael and his McAuley Schenker Group who stepped in at the last minute. Some were disappointed by his performance - certainly not me! Even though Joe Elliott's band was excellent, I personally preferred M.S.G.
I then waited nearly a decade to see him again, but what a stroke of luck to finally discover U.F.O. live during the "Walk On Water" Tour at the Élysée Montmartre in 1997. With Mr. Schenker, of course, but also Phil Mogg, Pete Way, and Paul Raymond... The only one missing was Andy Parker, who was replaced by Simon Wright (AIIZ, AC/DC, Dio...), not too shabby! I'll never forget that night, even though the blond guitarist would slam the door on U.F.O. again shortly afterward.
I saw him again the following year at the Zénith for the G3 tour, alongside Joe Satriani and Uli Jon Roth, with Patrick Rondat opening. Then again in 2006 at the Élysée Montmartre for the 25th anniversary of my favorite album, MSG - a night when I bought my very first Michael hoodie, which I still treasure and wear to every one of his concerts, including this one.
Starting in 2012, he returned with Temple Of Rock, alongside Doogie White and the original Scorpions rhythm section (Francis and Herman) at the old Forum Vauréal - where he came back again the following year, much to my delight. I also caught him at L'Empreinte de Savigny in 2014 for two back-to-back, legendary shows.
In 2015, he played the Bataclan - a venue that would, tragically, be struck by horror just ten days later. I then waited seven long years before seeing him again, this time at Hellfest, with the excellent Ronnie Romero on vocals?though the set felt a bit too short for my taste.
So I was eager to return to the Forum Vauréal on this spring Friday night for my tenth encounter with my favorite German guitarist, during an evening entirely dedicated to his U.F.O. years - joined by the talented Erik Grönwall, whose vocal performances I had already appreciated with H.E.A.T. and later Skid Row.
At exactly 7:30 p.m., the Swiss band Gut's kicked off the night by warming up the Forum crowd with their AC/DC-inspired setlist. You could even say they're clones of the Australian band - especially in the onstage antics of their two guitarists, who channel Angus and Malcolm. Musically, they held their own, and songs like "Nuts On The Road," "Dirty Squeeze," and "Drink To Drink" were catchy and energetic, despite being quite close in style to their legendary forebears. The riffs were tight, the solos effective, and the singer's voice was right on point?somewhere between Bon and Brian. The crowd didn't miss a beat, welcoming these cheerful Helvetians with open arms.
Next up were the Germans of Human Zoo. I didn't know them before, but I must admit I really enjoyed discovering their set. Their influences tick all my boxes?from Pink Cream 69 and Gotthard (whose album name they adopted for their own band) to Bonfire and Krokus. What makes them stand out is their saxophonist, who brings a surprisingly welcome pop touch to their traditional hard rock.
Celebrating their twentieth anniversary, they came to present their fifth album, released in 2024: Echoes Beyond, with its artwork displayed across the entire stage?marketing at work! We got to hear brand-new scorchers like "Hello! Hello!," "Gun 4 A While," the very FM-friendly "Echo" and "To The Ground," and the infectious "Ghost In Me."
They also revisited older tracks like "The Answer," "Like A Bitch," and the punchy "Love Train." In just 40 fast-paced minutes, Human Zoo won over a host of new fans?including me. I won't miss them next time they play in France.
And now it was time for the great Michael to delight us with a U.F.O. Best Of - especially meaningful since Phil Mogg disbanded the original group a few years ago.
Wearing his trademark chapka, Michael was flanked by Erik on vocals, Barend Courbois on bass, and the ever-loyal Bodo Schopf on drums, with Steve Mann handling keyboards and rhythm guitar.
They launched into the heavy "Natural Thing," a fan favorite, followed by the equally classic "Only You Can Rock Me."
To be honest, I didn't feel Erik's voice was the best fit for the U.F.O. catalog - it's quite different from Mogg's, lacking that warm, bluesy edge. I struggled with it throughout the evening, but honestly, that's my only critique.
One thing's for sure: the former H.E.A.T. and Skid Row frontman is a true survivor, having recently battled life-threatening leukemia. Though he's still a bit thin, he showed great energy all night long.
Bodo, partially hidden behind a plexiglass screen, was as fierce as ever on the drums. Barend has now earned his stripes as a "new" member of M.S.G., and Steve remained laser-focused, constantly switching between his two instruments.
The setlist continued with familiar territory: "Hot 'n' Ready" and the iconic "Doctor Doctor," which might've worked better toward the end of the set.
Another gem followed - "Mother Mary," exuding strong 70s vibes. Things slowed a bit with "I'm A Loser," which saw Erik pick up an acoustic guitar, before launching into the hard-hitting "This Kid's," which fired up the entire room.
The atmosphere was electric for the excellent "Lights Out," sung loudly and passionately by the crowd.
Mr. Schenker's love for instrumentals is well known - he released entire albums of them during the Thank You era. He treated us to "Lipstick Traces" from Phenomenon, seamlessly followed by "Between The Walls" from Force It, and then a lush, expressive "Belladonna" from No Heavy Petting.
What a thrill to hear the keyboard intro to the unforgettable "Love To Love," which has long ranked in my personal U.F.O. Top 5.
They kept the momentum going with a dynamic "Let It Roll," where Barend and Bodo gave it their all. The tempo didn't drop as they charged into the rollicking "Can You Roll Her," once again sung in unison by the die-hard fans.
We remained on my beloved 1976 album No Heavy Petting with the powerful "Reasons Love" - completing the entire A-side of that legendary vinyl.
And it wasn't over yet. The equally iconic "Rock Bottom" came crashing in, with a flurry of fiery solos from the blond maestro.
Of course, no U.F.O. tribute would be complete without the anthems "Shoot Shoot" and "Too Hot To Handle," which sent the front rows into a frenzy!
By the end, we'd practically heard the entire legendary Strangers In The Night live album?except for "Out In The Street," curiously missing from both the night's setlist and Schenker's recent album My Years With U.F.O., which features a star-studded lineup of guest vocalists.
Mr. Schenker made a triumphant return to the "new" Forum Vauréal in 2025, playing to a packed - and thrilled - crowd. Let's hope he comes back soon with a set focused on his solo career.
