Wanted to give you an update from last night's show in Orange County. The band hit the stage at 11:15 and played an absolute blistering set with no breaks for a full 90 minutes! Stevie Ray Vaughan used to do this, but in all of the times I've seen Michael, I've never seen him do it. He's in the best shape I've ever seen, very lean and you can tell he's not drinking. From the opening strain of Ride On My Way all the way through the last notes from Doctor Doctor, Michael and company were super tight, full of energy, and always smiling. They were having a very very good time and it's so good to see. Pretty funny when they came out for the first encore, Gipsy Lady wearing straw hats with some help from roadies and guitar techs on acoustic guitar and percussion. Michael went straight into Rock Bottom as the last note was fading and he tore it up! I love hearing him do different things with these songs and he did not disappoint. Hard to believe that in his mid 50's this guy is actually getting better, but it's true. Leaving the drugs and alcohol out of the equation is the best thing Michael could ever do.
This show is almost identical to seeing him back in the early 80's, but BETTER! The songs are almost all from the first two MSG albums, appropriately, and with a few new ones thrown in. I haven't heard him do Lost Horizons in awhile and it's always been one of my favorites. With On And On and Attack Of The Mad Axeman, Let Sleeping Dogs Lie, and Cry For The Nations added it was just like 1981 all over again.
Gary and he have great chemistry, and the whole band is like a super group. Wayne is a way better guitar player than Paul Raymond ever was, Rev is SICK on the bass, Pete thumps hard as hell and Michael, well, like I said, if he can stay clean, nobody can touch the Blond Bomber! I hope anyone who is even considering seeing a show does not miss out on this tour. It may never be this good again.
